Many of the positions that become available in the industry require the operators to be members of a union which will protect them if problems arise. However, to reap any of the benefits associated with the profession, a forklift licence must be obtained. In order to operate a forklift, the person must have a full driver’s licence as well as a good driving record. Since the risks are high and a lack of experience can threaten lives, it is important for the driver to have additional requirements. Drivers must be in peak physical condition as far as eyesight, hearing loss, and neurological problems, as well as being free of any drugs that may alter or impair their operation.
Training is also required before the driver will be issued a forklift licence. Most courses these days offer training in time frames between four hours and four days depending on the standards of the individual company.
